Candidates
Ideal candidates for eyelid surgery are in good health and have realistic expectations about their results. Patients with excess eyelid skin and deposits of under-eye fat that contribute to a puffy appearance are likely candidates. Those with heavy eyebrows or deep forehead lines in addition to drooping eyelids should consider combining a brow lift with their eyelid surgery. Both men and women can benefit from eyelid surgery and may identify with one or more of the following problems:
Procedure
Eyelid surgery is performed as an outpatient procedure using general anesthesia or IV sedation. The surgery typically lasts between one and three hours depending on the extent of correction required to achieve your ideal results. During eyelid surgery, excess tissue is removed and fat may be repositioned to improve puffiness or lost volume. Patients may have their upper eyelids corrected, their lower eyelid corrected, or a combination of both.
Upper Eyelid Lift
An incision in placed in the natural crease when improving the upper eyelid. Drooping eyelid muscles are lifted and positioned to sit in a more natural location. Fat may be redistributed along upper part of the eye socket. Excess skin is trimmed away. Great care is taken to maintain the natural contours and folds of the eyes.
Lower Eyelid Lift
Correcting the lower eyelids requires an incision either within the lid itself or along the lash line. The lower eyelid muscle may be tightened, and fat can be repositioned to reduce puffiness. Excess tissue along the lower lid is removed, and the remaining tissue is carefully tightened due to the thin nature of the skin.
Recovery
Bruising and swelling around the eyes can be expected after the procedure. You may experience excessive tearing, light sensitivity, and double vision following your surgery. Over-the-counter pain medication can control any associated discomfort. You should rest with your head elevated for several days following your surgery. Most patients can return to work within two weeks and can resume their regular exercise routine after four weeks. Excess swelling should subside after six weeks, at which time your final results will be visible.
Results
Most patients are able to erase years from their appearance with this procedure. Eyelid surgery is designed to provide long-lasting results, and your more youthful eye appearance will continue to age naturally. Lifestyle and environmental factors can impact the aging process. Some patients choose to use routine Dysport® Cosmetic treatments to maintain the quality of their results.
Most incisions are discreetly obscured in the natural folds of the eyelids. If any visible scarring develops, it is likely to fade over time.
